Somnium Of The Young And Beautiful (Libations & Oscillations Cocktail)

artworks-000061957129-vut085-t500x500.jpg

cock·tail
ˈkäkˌtāl/
noun

1. An alcoholic mixed drink that contains three or more ingredients, at least one being a spirit, one sweet/sugary, and one sour/bitter.

2. An intoxicating sonic concoction consisting of a delicate blend of various tracks and samples, then cut with a fine layer of supplemental sound design.

So what happens when you invite L&O to play a Great Gatsby party? You get a jazzy fusion of retro melodies blended into a more modern framework that compliments that martini in your hand. While the whole set was a left-field trip through the lounge sound of the 1920s, we felt that the opener stood out as something our larger internet audience would enjoy.

Congi's track Somnium (Latin for "The Dream") provided a perfect noir backdrop to Lana Del Rey's somber lyrics on nostalgia, and the desperation of youth. The product of their tonal marriage is something we're happy to share with you today.

Libations & Oscillations - Myriads Revisited EP

myriads.jpg

Originally released as part of the Waxhole Chilled Wax Vol. 1 Compilation.
(Found Here https://thewaxhole.bandcamp.com/track/myriads-rise)

Inspired by a quote from Alexander Pope this is our second original tune to have put out and we're quite happy with how it turned out.

“Lulled in the countless chambers of the brain, our thoughts are linked by many a hidden chain; awake but one, and in, what myriads rise!” – Alexander Pope

The rest of the remixes where released separately as an EP to celebrate the success of the track. (Found Here https://boozeandbeats.bandcamp.com/album/myriads-revisited)
Thanks to our sound system for pulling together and making this happen.

Libations & Oscillations - I Follow Rivers (Lykke Li Cover)

i-follow-rivers.jpg

With as much Indie music as Noctum processes, somehow this tune skated by his radar entirely. It was only after hearing a friend sing along to a clubby remix that he scoped the original and shared it with Tonebreaker.

Our initial remix attempts yielded a sort of two-step revival that neither Tonebreaker nor Noctum were genuinely happy with. With frustration rising and the project almost on the ropes, we determined that while we enjoyed many of the elements that we had designed, working without raw stems left us with very little creative breathing room.

So we scrapped the original track and looked at what remained.

With no acapella of Lykke Li vocals available, we searched the dregs of the Internet to find a generic European Cover CD by the non-descript name, "Tribute Mega Stars." On this was a very solid recording of an unknown vocalist singing "I Follow Rivers." We would love to credit the source of these vocals but without any real documentation there's no way to find out who she is. So we placed these vocals over our arrangement and immediately, they breathed life into the track revealing empty sonic gaps for us to sink our collective teeth into.

Three weeks later we had a track... Nay... A cover. Outside the lyrical content, everything's been sampled, sliced and synthesized to fit our new iteration. Without further adieu, we present Libations & Oscillations cover of Lykke Li's phenomenal song, I Follow Rivers.

Portishead - Roads (Libations & Oscillations Lori Petty Remix)

Roads_poster.jpg

So this is what happens when a young Noctum decides to try and make his first music video armed with only clips from Youtube and iMovie. While I haven’t learned much from this I have learned a thing or two since.

So this remix just happened. There was a point in Cadavre Exquis where we thought, "Man, it would be nice to drop some Portishead right here, but it doesn't quite fit." So we remixed it. You have to be careful when remixing something as timeless as Portishead. The original is so beautiful, we didn't want to change that much but rather just amp up the groove a bit to fit the context of the mix. We hope you enjoy it. Originally appears on Cadavre Exquis which can be found here. http://soundcloud.com/boozeandbeats/c... This is a special video mix, and is intended for promotional purposes only. Libations & Oscillations - Cadavre Exquis

CadavreExquis.jpg

So this is the fifth mix chronologically but the story this mix takes place after our duo Dr. Dirigible and The Outlaw Saint have left Professor Seaglitch's Isle. In this arrangement, we hear the newfound musical techniques of Dr. Dirigible and The Outlaw Saint. The former title could be, "The Exquisite Corpse of My Former Self," however that is a touch extravagant. Instead "Cadavre Exquis" describes both the technique and emotion that was put into this mix. This was put together and performed for the 38th Ambient Campout and lead to one of our favorite remixes we’ve ever done. The Portishead remix here was something that happened. There was a point in Cadavre Exquis where we thought, "Man, it would be nice to drop some Portishead right here, but it doesn't quite fit." So we remixed it. You have to be careful when remixing something as timeless as Portishead. “Tracklist:
1. AMB - Skyway 2011
2. Hecq - With Angels (Trifonic Remix)
3. Massive Attack - Teardrop (Knight Riderz Remix)
4. Florence & The Machine - Cosmic Love (Seven Lions Remix)
5. Bird Of Prey - The First Step
6. Portishead - Roads (Libations & Oscillations Lori Petty Remix)
7. The Flashbulb - Teeming Disconnected
8. Phaeleh - Afterglow (ft. Soundmouse) (Akira Kiteshi Remix)
9. Phaeleh - In The Twilight
10. Bird Of Prey & Chillax’n - Pipe Dream
11. Made in Heights - SKYLARK INTERABANG?!
12. Kid Beyond - I Shall Be Free

Libations & Oscillations - The Cracked Chronometer

Crackedchronometer.jpg

Typically during the burning of an effigy at a burn event there is no music. Not that it’s a law written in stone but it’s something that people had come to think of like a tradition. At the request of the effigy designer, Dottie Spearman, we challenged this line of thinking. Several things happened here the first being one of the most complicated mixsets either Tonebreaker or myself have ever put together and an L&O Cocktail at the end. Which is one of the strangest things I’ve ever put together. However, I still love it for it’s dark and cinematic feel.

In this tale, Dr. Dirigible (Tonebreaker) and The Outlaw Saint (Joseph Noctum) have affixed an ancient Duergar chronometer to their airship, the S.S. Discord. According to legend, this device will allow them to sail the temporal seas firsthand. However, upon entering the tesseract, the chronometer cracks and sends our band of ne’er-do-well’s skittering through the fabric of spacetime. The resulting adventure through past, present, and future is transcribed in sound for your listening enjoyment. We used all of our skills mixing, sampling, remixing and producing this arrangement to make a cinematic tour that spans a myriad of musical styles. Marrying the world of acoustic and electronic music, we hope you enjoy this auditory accompaniment to the stunning visuals, performances, pyro and ultimately, our 2012 burn

Joseph Noctum - Pyropolis 2012: Phuture Perreo

inthepink.jpg

The third and last installment in my Pyropolis series. In 2009 Dave Nada changed electronic music while DJing a high school house party when he slowed down Afrojack's dutch house remix of 'Moombah' to 108bpm. I was instantly hooked and over the next few years, I collected the slow beginnings of Moombahton tracks as they came out. The year before I experimented one lazy afternoon at Flipside with a Moombahton set and I watch as people we’re subconsciously drawn in to dance and enjoy the beats. This is the set that I played for the Amalgam Coast's Dance Dance Like There Is A Gypsy In Your Pants / Tiki Happy Hour party because I wanted to bring something new. It was a great success as the music, crowd, gourmet drinks and atmosphere melted together to make a magical night.

“Tracklist:
1. Nadastrom & Heartbreak - Church
2. Alex Clare - Too Close (Nadastrom Remix)
3. Graffiti 6 - Annie You Reset! Me (A-Mac Moombahton Edit)
4. N.A.S.A. Ft. Kanye West, Lykke Li, and Santogold - Gifted (Mattb remix)
5. Pickster One and Chrizz Luvly - Dem Bow Is The New Amen (Edit)
6. Milo & Otis - Luck
7. Lana Del Rey - Born To Die (Guxxi Vump remix)
8. Fuss - US Bass Anthem (Noctums More Moombah Edit)
9. Oh, Beats! - On Fire
10. Sazon Booya Featurning Anna Yvette - Secret Heart
11. Clockwork - Squad Up (Torro Torro Remix) (Noctums More Moombah Edit)
12. Twinz Beatz - Get em high
13. Paul David - Nova
14. Mackai - I.D.T.O.R.
15. The Heavy - How You Like Me Now (Wick-it the Instigator Remix)”

Libations & Oscillations - Invasion Of The Soul Snatchers

soulsnatchers.jpg

It’s hard for me personally to pick-out a favorite Libations & Oscillations set. Tonebreaker and I made a lot of magic together in the studio piecing together songs from friends, remixing, and editing extremely avant-garde tracks. This mix would be up there at the top though. This was our set from Ambient Camping 36. We decided to construct a blend of haunting downtempo that creeps along and stitches together beautiful, yet somber melodies. In addition to being hauntingly beautiful, this places in some of our favorite artists and allowed us to really start putting our own flavor into those tracks through remixes and edits.

“Tracklist:
1. KiloWatts - Interlude
2. The Flashbulb - A Raw Understanding
3. Frank Riggio - Tryk Alimba
4. Eskmo - Moving Glowstream
5. Ill.Gates & MiM0SA - Never Alone
6. Two Fingers - Moth Rhythm
7. Beats Antique - Siren Song
8. Florence & The Machine - Heavy In Your Arms (C Berg Remix)
9. Phaeleh - From a distance
10. Emancipator - First Snow (Ooah Remix)
11. The Flashbulb - Kirlian Changes
12. Mercan Dede - Istanbul (L&O’s Two Broken Edit)
13. Beats Antique - Alto
14. See - I - Blow Up
15. THIEVERY CORPORATION - Is it over?
16. Bluetech - Three Worlds

Joseph Noctum - Pyropolis 2011: The Bad Boogie

inthepink.jpg

The second in my Pyropolis series. This time instead of looking to my past I had by this point had set up a new live performance method. Instead of DJ’ing with vinyl, or USB’s as I had learned for last year. Now I was armed with a laptop, and MIDI controller to string together a DJ set with more control over the tracks, EQs, and FX than ever. While the sets were live and raw and filled with additional live chops and layered effects I would still make a studio version for release. Not the same as the live version but a pleasant memory for those who were there. This mix also includes two of my “Calculated Crunk” mash-ups I was known for during this time in my performances.

“Tracklist:
1. Lokid - Bad 2 Be Good
2. Who Cares - Lucky Larry (Samples)
3. Probiotik - Say It Then ft. Emotionz
4. J.me.J vs. Ying Yang Twins - Tigershaker / The Anthem (Noctum Mashup)
5. The Glitch Mob - Drive It Like You Stole It (Mixtape Version)
6. Mr. Rogers vs. Rick Ross - Dynamite / Husslin (Noctum Mashup)
7. Love and Light - Good Vibes
8. Zen Death Squad - Cyber Lazer Dojo Training
9. Who Cares - These Three Words (Ill-esha)
10. Zen Death Squad - Awesome Patrol
11. MC2 - MC Slicing
12. JPOD & The Root Sellers - Medicon
13. JPOD & The Root Sellers - Stop Drop and Roll
14. VibeSquaD - Sleaze Me
15. K-Lab - Grimewarp
16. King Fantastic - Westcoastsynthesizerbeachbumgangstermusic (Knight Riderz)”

Trey Turner & Joseph Noctum - The New Sound

trey_turner_and_joseph_noctum-the_new_sound-v0.png

Ok, this is just a fun mix. It holds the test of nearly a decade and still sounds great and new. Trey Turner approached me with a concept for a CD to pass out at the upcoming Flipside. He already had a start with a fantastic set of tracks and sound clips from The Mighty Boosh. (I mean… Noel Fielding, how could I not be on board). All Trey really needed was someone who could add to the “leftfield-ness” and eclectic tone of this mix. So I was instantly on board and it was a hit. I still have one of the albums in my studio, with the ridiculously good artwork created by Cate. This mix still holds a special place in my heart, and if I never need to be in a better mood, I can always pop this on.

“Tracklist:
1. The Mighty Boosh - The New Note
2. Mix N Blend & Narch - I Got... (Beats Antique)
3. The Mighty Boosh - El Sonido Nuevo
4. Panzer Kunst - Halo Around The Sun Or Moon
5. Bird of Prey - Walkabout
6. Hybrid - I’m Still Awake
7. The Mighty Boosh - Let Us Begin Our Quest
8. Danny Breaks - The Sound
9. Modeselektor - Monkeyflip
10. Ash Trey Jinkins - Yodaz Brain (Monk Fly)
11. Sket1 - Robopimp
12. An-ten-nae - Get Low
13. Senz Beats - Beautiful Life ft. Megabusive
14. The Mighty Boosh - That New Sound
15. Moderat - Rusty Nails
16. Doshy - 3ws
17. Rustie - Hyperthrust
18. Rustie - Dragonfly
19. Pixelord - Cybernator (PXLRD)
20. Bird of Prey - Stargazer
21. Diplo vs. Sunday Girl - Four Floors
22. DCarls - When Everything Is Over

Libations & Oscillations - Bridge Burner

bridgeburner.jpg

This is the second in the Libations & Oscillations mixtape saga. Tonebreaker and I both decided to play our various sets at various sound camps throughout the Flipside event. The close however was a joint L&O set that we performed after the effigy burned at the Amalgam Coast camp. Well, here it is... Another twisted construct from us to you. As always we have a story to go with the audio. This one starts in the waste of a crushed empire and ends elsewhere. We are but the poets who tell the story in between.

“Tracklist:
1. The Flashbulb - Undiscovered Colors
2. MiM0SA - Stairway
3. Karton - Play Our Game
4. DJ Mutiny - Responded (Under This Remix)
5. Andy Page - SERPENT
6. Bjork - Joga (Matta refix)
7. Cassius - The Sound Of Violence (Tha Trickaz Remix)
8. Love & Light - Squish City Feat. Chestshure Von Scribbles

Joseph Noctum - In The Pink

inthepink.jpg

This was a piece of the live set from one of the legendary parties at the Pink Palace. With a later release on nurevolution studios podcast who hosted the music for the night. I figure a full explanation isn’t needed. We’ll just go with the write up from someone in attendance.
”One night a group of cyborgs took over the Pink Palace and turned it into a cabaret. Their demands were to dance and be entertained, otherwise, they would enslave the human race. Joseph Noctum arrived armed with two hours of calculated crunk and made them dance as if he was their positronic programmer. In the end, they danced until he trounced their blinking monocles right onto the dancefloor. This mix is offered in testament to his heroic actions that night, for he may have saved humanity that day… but only for the time being.”

“Tracklist:
1. K-Lab - Out The Door
2. William Breakspear - Skydive
3. Opiuo - Robo Booty
4. Vent - Lunatics

Libations & Oscillations - Professor Seaglitch's Isle of Aural Decadence

landoprofessorseaglitch.jpg

The very first Libations & Oscillations mix. This one is a special mix as it cemented my longest-running musical partnership. It started with Tonebreaker wanting my help in a remix project he was working on. It then moved to us finishing an original track he was working on. That track became “Going Baroque”. The next thing we knew we were working on a live set to play together. This first one was not played as a duo as he had a DJ reunion show in Dallas to play and I had a show on the beach for Ambient Campout to play. So separated by 550 ish miles on the opposite ends of Texas we played this set. Later we released it on the nurevolution studios podcast. This marked the beginning of the journey by Dr. Dirigible (Tonebreaker) and the Outlaw Saint (Joseph Noctum).

“Tracklist:
1. Of Porcelain - Signal The Captain
2. The Glitch Mob vs. Le Roux - Bad Wings (Castle) / In For 3. The Kill (Acapella)
4. Ill-esha - Smoke and Mirrors
5. The Glitch Mob - Between Two Points ft. Swan
6. M83 - Skin of the Night (Of Porcelain)
7. Eskmo - Cloudlight
8. Fever Ray - I’m Not Done (R/D)
9. VibeSquad - Empower the Wallflower
10. R/D - Ballad of Melted Rapture
11. Truth - Perfect Combination
12. Nico Luminous - Speaker Box ft. Reva Devito
13. Ill-esha & Kitsch Palace - Shiki Miki

Mr. Rogers vs. Rick Ross - Dynamite Husslin (Noctum's Mashup)

calculatedCrunk.jpg

In 2011 I released a EP of “Calculated Crunk” mashups I had made out of Hip-Hop acapellas and Glitch-Hop beats. They really spiced up my shows during that time and once I was done playing them out I released them as tools for other DJ’s to download and playout.

Joseph Noctum - Peace Love Crunk

2010_12_12-joseph_noctum-peace_love_crunk.jpg

This was the first mix I did with the nurevolution studios podcast in mind for the release. Between hanging at the local burns, and playing parties together at the legendary Pink Palace in Austin I found an influence to really lean into the breakbeats and to take it even further with the midtempo glitch that was the undercurrent of both EDM scenes and the “burner” scenes. I even finished this mix up at the nurevolution studios with Trey Turner. I was used to clean, studio-produced house tracks. The fun new world of digital meant that some of the most creative glitch tracks weren’t always mastered with more than some compression.

“Tracklist:
1. S.P.E.C.T.R.E. / Missy Elliot - Bad Girls Go To Hell / Work It (Acappella)
2. Subvert - Speaker Humpin’ (Glitchy and Scratchy)
3. n8chur - Juicy ft. Sweatti
4. VibeSquaD & iLL Gates - the FIRE man
5. Sub Swara - Fire It Up ft. Lyrics Born
6. Kraddy - Let Go
7. Nosaj Thing - Coat Of Arms (Boreta)
8. Opiuo - Monkey Crunk (K-Lab)
9. Love and Light - Neon Thwomp Sauce
10. Freestylers & Pendulum ft. MC Sirreal - Painkiller (Kouncilhouse)
11. Professor Green ft. Lily Allen - Just Be Good To Green (Camo & Krooked)”

Headrockaz - Live At Ambient Camping 34: The Howling

TheHowling.jpg

From 2008 to 2010 I was involved in a Glitch, Bass, Turntablism duo called, Headrockaz along with DJ Dubmatique. It was a great time for live performance experimentation. Not satisfied anymore with just mixing two records together I wanted to create a custom experience that would change and evolve with each show. This was the beginning of what would eventually become the basis of Libations & Oscillation's live shows. Having been no stranger at this point to performing at Ambient Campouts I knew this would be the perfect place to dive in. Sadly while many sets from earlier Ambient Campouts have been lost to the ether this special performance was preserved for your enjoyment.

“Tracklist:
1. Opiuo - Watermouth Ft. Sunmonx
2. Michal Menert - One More Year
3. Bonobo - All In Forms
4. Pretty Lights - Gazing At The Glare
5. Gramatik - Take It Back
6. Love And Light - Funkin Lovely
7. Tipper - Razor Back VS. Ooah - Tubstomper
8. Mimosa - Get ‘Em
9. Daedelus - Dumbfound (edIT Remix)
10. Mad Zach, R2 The Specialist - Soul Fire

Joseph Noctum - African Red Bush

africanredbush.jpg

This was originally recorded back in the 2008 timeframe, but like so many of my projects lost when the cheap hardware I was using crashed. What did we ever do before the cloud? While the unfinished project recording files we’re never recovered the 35 minutes of test rendering was. Originally this was a mix done for my new girlfriend, now wife, who had missed out on my DJ glory days. Having “retired” from DJ’ing in 2005/06 I was convinced to make her a mixtape, as hopeless romantics often do. She is way more of a hip-hop head than I, but we agreed on Downtempo and Trip-Hop. This idea what a holdover from the Noctum Records days when I thought it would be fun to do a series based on what a DJ would play in a coffeehouse rather than a club. The name is taken from a type of Roobios tea. Which is a play on the Tea House that my now wife ran back then, along with her nickname, “Red”. During its life it was played during an Ambient Camping event and then eventually release on the nurevolution studios podcast in 2010.

2010 Was a busy year for shows and performances. As the build up came from a few years in “retirement” once I was unleashed there was so much music to catch up on it became one of my busier years. In preparation for my first Burning Flipside, a BurningMan offshoot event in Texas, I learned the hard way to transition from vinyl to USB DJ’ing. The result was my first outing in the city of Pyropolis and throwing down set after set for the Texas Tango. It is a compilation of a weeks worth of shows played. With plenty of sound camps to play at including, Carpe Noctem, Alpha Rhythms, and Winners Circle. Every track here was dropped at some point although maybe not in this order.
