At last, there was a success, it was only about 7 hours of sleep but it was all uninterrupted, and deep sleep. Glorious and I felt so much better. Sleep and adjustment to the jetlag just in time to enjoy two days before going home.
With a skip in my step, I set off for my last day of work. It went pretty smoothly and I learned a lot about the initiatives that are happening within the UK. Even have a new Cisco certification to go grab one weekend coming up. Pretty good stuff. I went to happy hour afterward and had a great conversation with some of my co-workers had an exceptional spicy chicken sandwich from the Deli. Just another reason that I’m really jealous we don’t have one of those at work back in Austin.
So after work despite the weather, despite having been to busy to get in any practice 5K’s this month. I decided I was going to go run my 5K for the virtual race in the Meadows that night. Now, this was a challenge because of the weather. It had been getting up to highs of 57 and lows of around 48. Which is plenty cold when you add in the 15 to 20 mile an hour winds. However that Friday the wind had broke and the clouds along with it so the high that day was about 43 and the temperature when I went running was about 38 degrees. Yeah, it was cold. I layered on my Hyperwarm tights, my basketball pants, my thin track jacket with a pullover to combat this. Despite all my potential downsides, weather, extra clothes, and lack of preparation other than my normal elliptical workouts something went right. I came in exactly 4 minutes under my time at the 5K race last spring. I guess being a little lazy this summer didn’t hurt me as badly as I thought. With fire in my legs and pride in my heart, I decided to treat myself for dinner that night so I headed over to Bread Meats Bread. After a short wait, I was seated and ordered the Lothian Wolf which is their signature Scottish beef patty, with American cheese, Crispy Bacon, Pulled Pork in BBQ sauce, crispy fried onions and 'Nduja with Sriracha Mayo. For the side, I had the Halloumi Fries. Don’t know what that is? Well, it is delicious and it’s fried strips of halloumi cheese. Which is a semi-hard, unripened, brined cheese made from a mixture of goat's and sheep's milk. Now last year I had the same meal with a bucket of cheese curds. (The kind you would put on poutine) and put the whole thing down easily. This time it wasn’t even close. Probably a little over half the pulled pork and half of the halloumi was left behind. Just another thing that makes me feel good about the progress I’ve made in actually taking care of my self.
After a workout like that and a meal that heavy it didn’t leave much else to do other than head back to the hotel and relax and fall asleep. I made out the couch for bed again and chugged water. Turning on the TV there was “The Dark Knight Rises” that had just about to start so I settled in and fell asleep at some point. There were big adventures to have the next day.
